Glossary of Technical Terms
Here at CDL we try not to use too much industry jargon. We know how irritating it can be, but sometimes it can’t be helped, so we’ve produced this glossary to help.
3PL - 3rd Party Logisitics, outsourcing activities related to Logistics and Distribution.
COD - Cash on Delivery
Distribution - Movement of goods from the source through the distribution channel, up to the final customer.
E-Commerce - Electronic Commerce, buying and selling of products or services over the Internet
E-Tailer / E-Retailer - Online retailer
E-Fulfilment - Process of taking an order via the internet and executing it by making it ready for delivery to its intended customer.
E-Logisitcs - The management of business operations, such as the acquisition, storage, transportation and delivery of goods along the supply chain.
FIFO - First In First Out, relating to stock rotation.
FMCG - Fast Moving Consumer Goods, retail goods that are generally replaced or fully used up over a short period of time.
Freight Fowarder - An organisation providing logistics services as an intermediary between the shipper and the carrier.
Fulfilment - The act of fulfiling a customer order.
POD - Proof of Delivery
POS - Point of Sale, the location where products are sold to customers.
POP - Point of Purchase, same as Point of Sale.
SKU - Stock Keeping Unit, a warehousing item that is unique because of some characteristic such as brand, size, colour or model.
Supply Chain - A series of processes a product undergoes before it reaches the consumer: raw material – product – warehouse – distribution – retailer – consumer.
